Exploration Geologist

Position Summary

The Exploration Geologist at GS Group Uganda will be at the forefront of discovering new mineral resources. S/he will employ your expertise to evaluate potential sites, analyse geological data, and generate maps and reports that guide our exploration initiatives. This role requires a unique blend of fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. Your goal will be to discover valuable mineral resources in a cost-effective and efficient manner.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

1.     Fieldwork & Data Collection: Plan, direct, and participate in geological, geochemical, and geophysical field studies and surveys. Conduct field surveys to collect and analyse soil, rock, and water samples. Map and sample areas of geologic formations to identify resources.

2.     Drilling, Trenching, Pitting & Sampling: Carry out exploratory drilling/trenching/pitting and sampling to confirm the presence and quantity of minerals. Log drill cores/chips/trenches/pits, ensuring best practices for sampling, QA/QC procedures, and database management. Monitor and assess drilling and sampling activities.

3.     Data Interpretation & Modelling: Interpret geological, geochemical, and geophysical information from sources such as survey data, well logs, bore holes, and aerial photos. Develop geological models and maps for exploration projects using specialized software like GIS, Leapfrog, and Micromine.

4.     Reporting & Collaboration: Prepare detailed geological maps, cross-sectional diagrams, charts, and reports concerning mineral extraction, land use, and resource management. Collaborate with drilling teams, mining engineers, and other professionals to provide geological guidance and determine the feasibility of mining at a particular site.

5.     Compliance & Best Practices: Ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations during all exploration activities. Stay updated with the latest geological research and exploration techniques.

Perform any additional related tasks as assigned by supervisors or management.

About You

·       Education & Experience

·       Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Earth Sciences, or a related field is required. A Master's degree or any training is an added advantage.

·       Proven experience in mineral exploration of more that 2 years is highly valued.

·       Proficiency with geological modelling and data analysis software (e.g., Leapfrog, ArcGIS, Surpac, Micro mine).

·       Strong understanding of sedimentology, stratigraphy, mineralogy, structural geology, and geochemistry.

Working Conditions:

·       Environment: This role typically involves a mix of office work, laboratory analysis, and extensive fieldwork in various outdoor environments. Fieldwork can be physically demanding and may require travel to remote locations.

·       Schedule: Schedules can vary, often including rotational shifts or a standard work period with extended hours during field seasons.
