 Position Summary

The Truck Driver at GS Group Uganda is responsible for driving and operating heavy trucks to transport materials such as concrete, sand, gravel, dirt, crushed rock, asphalt, and other construction materials to and from project sites. The driver ensures safe vehicle operation, performs vehicle inspections, coordinates with site personnel, and maintains the truck in good working condition.

 Major Duties & Responsibilities

  • Safely operate trucks to transport materials to designated construction sites or disposal locations.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure roadworthiness including checking brakes, tires, fluids, lights, and safety systems.
  • Load and unload materials using truck hydraulic systems, levers, or cranks accurately and safely.
  • Coordinate with site personnel, dispatchers, and other drivers for efficient load delivery and site operations.
  • Maintain accurate records of vehicle inspections, trips, maintenance, and any incidents or mechanical issues.
  • Ensure materials are correctly loaded, adhering to weight limits and distribution for safe transport.
  • Report any vehicle defects, accidents, or unsafe conditions immediately to the supervisor.
  • Perform routine truck maintenance tasks including cleaning, lubrication, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Follow all traffic laws, safety regulations, and company policies regarding vehicle operation and site safety.
  • Assist in coordinating routes and schedules, optimizing delivery times and site logistics.

Perform any additional related tasks as assigned by supervisors or management.

About You

Education & Experience

  • Valid heavy-duty Commercial Driver’s License for the relevant truck or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 10 years driving experience, preferably operating trucks or similar heavy construction vehicles.
  • Certificate or formal training in heavy vehicle operation is desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of vehicle maintenance, safety protocols, and road traffic regulations.
  • Physically fit and able to perform long shifts, manual handling, and vehicle upkeep tasks.
  • Good understanding of construction site operations and safety awareness.
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills to work effectively with site teams and supervisors.

 Technical Skills

  • Proficient operation of trucks, understanding vehicle controls, hydraulic systems for loading and unloading materials.
  • Mastery of driving large, heavy vehicles safely including handling braking, steering, and managing heavy loads.
  • Ability to perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections to verify vehicle safety and roadworthiness.
  • Knowledge of basic truck maintenance and troubleshooting to identify and report mechanical issues promptly.
  • Familiarity with GPS and route navigation systems for effective route planning and timely deliveries.
  • Understanding of weight distribution and load securing practices to ensure safe transport.
  • Adherence to traffic laws, safety standards, and construction site regulations.
  • Competence in communicating effectively with site personnel, dispatchers, and other drivers for coordinated operations.
  • Ability to maintain accurate logs and documentation of trips, inspections, and vehicle maintenance.
  • Awareness of environmental conditions and ability to adjust driving accordingly to maintain safety and control.
