Assistant Gold Smelting Technician

Position Summary:

The Assistant Gold Smelting Technician at GS Group Uganda will provide critical support to Senior Smelting Technicians in all aspects of gold room operations. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in pyrometallurgy, working with high-temperature furnaces and precious metals in a fast-paced industrial environment. You will learn the fundamentals of flux chemistry, furnace operation, and bullion production while adhering to the highest standards of safety and quality.

S/he will work closely under the direct supervision and mentorship of Senior Smelting Technicians and the Metallurgy Supervisor.

Major Duties & Responsibilities:

1.     Operational Support: Assist in the preparation, charging, and operation of induction and gas-fired smelting furnaces under the direct supervision of senior technicians. Help load crucibles with feed material (e.g., carbon fines, concentrate, sludge) and fluxes.

2.     Flux & Material Handling: Accurately weigh and mix flux reagents (borax, silica, soda ash) according to prescribed recipes. Prepare samples and feed materials for processing.

3.     Pouring & Casting: Assist during the molten metal pouring process, including preparing Molds, applying release agents, and supporting the senior technician during bullion bar casting.

4.     Slag Management: Assist with the tapping, collection, and disposal of slag. Monitor slag appearance and consistency under supervision.

5.     Equipment Maintenance & Cleaning: Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of smelting furnaces, crucibles, tools, and the gold room work area. Ensure all equipment is kept in good working order and report any faults or maintenance needs promptly.

6.     Sampling & Assay Support: Collect and prepare process samples (feed, slag, bullion) for laboratory assay. Assist with basic on-site quality checks and ensure accurate labelling and documentation.

7.     Data Entry & Documentation: Accurately record process data, including weights, temperatures, flux usage, and pour numbers. Maintain logbooks and assist with daily production reports.

8.     Safety & Housekeeping: Strictly adhere to all safety protocols, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Participate in risk assessments and toolbox talks. Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free workspace at all times.

9.     Learning & Development: Actively participate in on-the-job training to develop a deep understanding of smelting processes, metallurgical principles, and gold room best practices.

Perform any additional related tasks as assigned by supervisors or management.

About You

Education & Experience:

·       High school diploma or equivalent is required.

·       A technical certificate or diploma in Metallurgy, Mineral Processing, or a related field is highly preferred.

·       Previous experience in a mining, mineral processing, foundry, or heavy industrial environment is an asset but not required. Entry-level candidates with a strong work ethic and willingness to learn are encouraged to apply.

·       Basic understanding of weights and measures, simple math, and mechanical processes. Comfortable using computers for basic data entry.

Physical Requirements:

·       Ability to work in a hot, dusty, and noisy industrial environment.

·       Capable of standing for extended periods, lifting up to 25–50 kg and performing repetitive tasks while wearing full PPE (heat-resistant gloves, face shield, apron, steel-toe boots, etc.).

Working Conditions:

·       Environment: This role is 100% based in an industrial processing plant or gold room.

·       Work is performed near high-temperature furnaces (exceeding 1,000°C/1,800°F) and involves exposure to molten metal, heavy equipment, dust, and chemicals.

·       Schedule: Full-time station employment and off station where necessary.
